What Is a Root Canal Surgery?

Generally, a root canal is all that is needed to save teeth with injured pulp from extraction. Occasionally, this non-surgical procedure, known as an Apicoectomy, will not be sufficient to heal the tooth and your endodontist will recommend surgery.

What Is a Cracked Tooth and Can It Be Treated?

Cracked teeth demonstrate many types of symptoms, including pain when chewing, temperature sensitivities, or even the release of biting pressure. It is also common for pain to come and go, making it difficult to diagnose the cause of discomfort.

Seek early diagnosis by visiting your dentist as soon as you notice pain or sensitivity.
Avoid chewing on the affected side to prevent further damage and reduce discomfort.
Consider dental crowns to protect the cracked tooth and restore function.
Root canal treatment if needed when the crack reaches the pulp to save the tooth.

Traumatic Injuries

Injuries to the mouth can cause teeth to be pushed back into their sockets. Your endodontist or general dentist may reposition and stabilize your tooth. Root canal treatment is usually started within a few weeks of the injury and a medication, such as calcium hydroxide, will be placed inside the tooth. Eventually, a permanent root canal filling will be implanted.

Apexification:

Here, unhealthy pulp is removed, and medication is used to create a hardened barrier at the root tip. Because root walls stop developing, restoring the tooth properly is important to prevent fractures.

Avulsed Teeth:

If a tooth is completely knocked out, quick action is critical. Keep the tooth moist—ideally in the socket, milk, or water with a pinch of salt. Your endodontist will recommend treatment based on root development and how long the tooth was out.
